The Effects of Implicit, Explicit, and Synergistic Training on Learning an Artificial Grammar

چکیده
ionist Theory Abstractionist theorists contend that acquisition of implicit knowledge occurs through the induction of rules governing the construction of a complex structured domain without conscious reflection to do so (Reber, 1989). The abstraction theorists provide evidence for this view through the numerous studies that have demonstrated transfer (Knowlton and Squire, 1994; Mathews et. al., 1989; Reber, 1969). Transfer is the ability to continue applying knowledge correctly when the surface structure (letter set in artificial grammars) is changed before the testing phase but the underlying rules (the same artificial grammar) remain the same (Reber, 1969). The ability of transfer has the abstractionist theorists believing that the underlying rules from the grammar were learned and not just surface structure similarities (Mathews et al., 1989; Reber, 1969). The abstractionist theory is the oldest view concerning how implicit knowledge is acquired (Reber, 1967). In the beginning the abstractionist theory (Reber, 1969) contended that implicit learners acquire implicit knowledge because they formed a (nonconscious) mental representation of the rules used by the researchers to generate the letter strings. This representative knowledge was said to be acquired, stored, and used to guide responses.

The Comparative Effect of Task Type and Learning Conditions on the Achievement of Specific Target Forms
The completion mode (individual, collaborative) of the tasks and the conditions under which these modes are performed have been reported to play an important role in language learning. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of employing text editing tasks performed both individually and collaboratively, on the achievement of English grammar under explicit and implicit learning condi...

This study aimed to investigate the effects of Systemic Theoretical Instruction (STI), grounded in Socio-cultural Theory and proposed by Gal’perin, on developing Iranian EFL learners’ knowledge of English tense-aspect system. To this end, two low-intermediate classes, including 24 and 21 language learners aged between 12-19, were taught the distinction between simple past and present perfect te...
متن کاملThe Impact of Structured Input-based Tasks on L2 Learners’ Grammar Learning
Abstract Task-based language teaching has received increased attention in second language research. However, the combination of structured input-based approach and task-based language teaching has not been examined in relation to L2 grammar learning. To address this gap, the present study investigated how the structured input-based tasks with and without explicit information impacted learners’ ...

متن کاملMeasuring the Effectiveness of Explicit and Implicit Instruction through Explicit and Implicit Measures
Many studies have examined the effect of different approaches to teaching grammar including explicit and implicit instruction. However, research in this area is limited in a number of respects. One such limitation pertains to the issue of construct validity of the measures, i.e. the knowledge developed through implicit instruction has been measured through instruments which favor th...
